Our New POA FILLY born, March 19th 2007 out of the blind POA mare Summer
Our blind rescued POA mare had her foal yesterday ( March 19th 2007 between 8am and 12 pm) It is a very pretty Grulla Filly! This Poor Filly has had a really rough time since her birth, Please pray for her to stay well and be happy.  She has a lot of attitude and she is a fighter. I did not know she was born until around 2:30pm and was told the dam would not let her nurse all day. So I tried for about 5 hrs to get her to allow her foal to nurse while waiting for my vet to show up. Trust me I tried EVERYTHING, but she would Kick and then Kick Harder, she never ever got tired of kicking! So when the vet got here at about 7:00pm she sedated her and tried milking her, well she kicked the vet! Bad move. She got A LOT more drugs ( till she was about to fall over) . Well after this we finally got some milk, not a lot about 200cc and tubed the filly and got it in her. The vet ( Dr. Tracie Daniels) said this mare had the worst case of Udder Edema she had seen! Her udders were very hard and sore as she would not let the foal nurse, making vary hard to get any milk from her . So after we tubed the filly with milk she got a enema and pooped and got her cord dipped ( boy did she hate that). The mare then got a Catheter inserted into her vain in her neck so I could administer sedation. Then I followed the vet to the clinic to pick up the Equine IgG that is a antibody replacement for foals. I got home at about 10:00pm and put that down the tube into her stomach and then pulled to tube. The total vet bill was $391.85. Then at about 12:00am sedated the mare with 2cc of Ace and 2cc of xylazine ( If you give her any less she will kick hard) And I have been doing this ever 2hrs. The foal has also been getting bottles of Foal LAC milk formula in between as I don’t feel she gets much from the mare, as even sedated she only allows her to nurse for a few minutes.
So that is where I am at as of 4:00pm on 3/20/07. I will update this when I see the vet in the next HR or so….

Filly’s Visit to the vet day 2

Okay well Super news!!!
The filly got a decent amount of antibodies in her yesterday from the IgG! So she dose not need the transfusion, big worry off my mind:.> She said she ideally should be at 1200 but she is between 400 and 800 so she should be okay. I will take her temperature daily to make sure she stays healthy and I half to continue to drug the mare up every 2 HRS to nurse for at least 3 more days to see if we cant get her to accept the foal ( I really don’t think this will happen but I am going to try). I will also half to feed her the Foal LAC to keep her where she needs to be and hydrated as we still cannot get a lot of milk out of the mare.

Are you asleep yet? It looks like it...

Can I nurse yet, OH No I guess not! ( I got the best pic. I could, she is kicking at the foal as she is not yet 100% under yet)

333

Yippee I can nurse now!

Note: the filly is VERY smart and will not try to nurse unless I am their and have the mare tied, she has learned she will get kicked any other time. So she really is not at any risk of being harmed, the mare is very nice to her filly otherwise...

3/21/07: Filly is doing great! She is not as dehydrated as she was, still a little but not bad. She is now drinking the foal LAC milk really well out of a bottle every 1 to 2 HRS                    ( about 16 oz a feeding) along with whatever she gets out of summer the mare while I have her sedated. I was told she needs 3 gallons a day and we got up to 2 1/2 today! So we should hopefully get the whole 3 gallons in her tomorrow, she is really getting good at sucking on the bottle. She whinnies and comes running to me every time I come in to see her, she is such a sweetie, but is a handful, lol. She has allot of attitude. We will be working with her daily and imitating the savvy club DVD’s we have of Pat Parelli training his foal Smart Seven, so hopefully she will grow up well mannered, easy to work with, and non fearful of anything, lol. I will update this web site as much as possible so you can all keep updated on her progress. And feel free to come visit her, just call or E-mail me and I will tell ya when to come over! Also She still is in great need of a Angel if anyone is interested in becoming her angel please e-mail me. Other ways you can help: donate any amount of money, even small amounts help! Donate Foal LAC milk replacer and pellets ( we will be using ALOT of this) you can buy it and drop it off, or have it shipped to me, also my feed store Alachua Farm and Lumber carriers it and you can call and prepay for it and I will pick it up 386-462-3003.

Thank you all for your prayers and help, I really have a good feeling that she is going to pull throw this now and become a great pony when she is grown :.>

Update 3/30/2007: The filly is doing GREAT! The mom ( Summer) is finally letting her nurse!!!!! No more sleepless nights for me:.> The kids at my preschool were really taking advantage of that for awhile, lol ... She is running and playing and having a super time and feeling good. Summer is doing well as well, we were scared she would get an infection from her catheter but she seems to be fine as of today so all is well. She loves the filly and tries her best to nurse her when needed. Although she is still not a great role model for this filly so it will be alot of work to help this filly gain some manners! She has dominated summer and will kick and rear at her ( especially at nursing time when summer still bites her occasionally) . She has a strong survival instinct that’s for sure. But all is well and she will start her training now so we hopefully will not have future problems. Anyone that wants to help is more then welcome to come on over, I could always use the help! Thank you all so much for caring and I will keep this page updated as she grows.

At the moment all we need for this filly is a fan we can put in her stall as it is really hot out their. I am looking for one of those big metal ones ( I think they are priced at about $50.00) So if anyone has one they would like to donate she would really appreciate it! Oh and she still would love to have a angel of her own THANKS!

Thank you Crystal in Ludowici, GA for being this fillies Angel.  We feel Truly Blessed that she has stepped up and agreed to help.

New pictures taken 4/27/07. She is growing like a weed and boy can she move, she is going to make a nice show pony! Very nice extended trot. She is a very smart little girl and a fast learner. She will know all of level one Parelli before she is even weaned! Well except for the riding part.. I will try to get some pics of her training sessions up soon, its hard to take pictures of me training a horse by myself, lol. But I have a video camera now that I can take still pics from the video so I will get some that way! Check back next weekend for training pics!

New pics taken 6/07/07: I am really growing up! I am almost as tall as my mom and my step dad ( isaha) now, so I know I will outgrow them! I am shedding out to be a Black, maybe grulla, I am such a pretty girl and I thank everyone who helped me get this far and those who continue to help out with my care. I will be getting my feet trimmed for the 1st time next week! wish me luck:.> It will cost $20.00 and will be well worth it, My feet need to stay in shape so I can grow up strong and balanced. I am now also eating very well on my own. I am going to be started on Equine Jr, to ensure I get proper nutrition for my growing body. It is $14.00 a bag and I know my human mommy would appreciate any help she could get with my feed bill and vet/farrier bills as well.

Look I learned a new trick all on my own!
